On-Farm Wool Classing at Sally Fox’s
September 30 @ 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm
Join Fibershed Producer Sally Fox with accredited fleece grader Stephany Wilkes for an on-farm wool classing day, plus fleece sale. Sally Fox, known for her classical, natural colored cotton breeding, raises fine Merino sheep with biodynamic practices amidst rotating crop production in the Capay Valley. The fine art of wool classing–grading and sorting wool according to quality markers like length, strength, fineness, and crimp–can help you understand how to view a raw fleece. This hands-on presentation is especially for hand spinners and fiber hobbyists who would like instruction in how to identify and select raw fleeces. As a certified Wool Classer, Stephany Wilkes will help attendees learn to evaluate raw wool and give pointers on the most important things to consider. She will also compare and contrast the wool needs of fiber hobbyists and craftspeople with the needs of commercial industry, which can be quite different. Participants will be provided with worksheets and wool samples to take home, and can purchase fleeces from the farm.
