Jacalyn Post and her husband live on a small farm in Solano County along with their spinner’s flock of sheep. Moving to this farm recently has let Jacalyn realize her dream of actually living where her sheep live! Before that, she boarded them on another farm where they got very good care but she missed the day to day events that go along with having a flock.
Her spinner’s flock consists of several sheep breeds: Jacob, Navajo-Churro, Wensleydale, Shetland, and Karakul. They are protected by their guardian llama, “Paridot.” Jacalyn processes the wool from these animals, as well as other animals (California Red Sheep, California Variegated Mutant (CVM) Sheep and alapacas) in the fibershed area. She hand spins the wool and then knits a variety of household items as well as “catnip mice” cat toys. Jacalyn created her business, Jack’s Wool / Isabelle’s Items in which she focuses on selling items made from the wool of these breeds. She named her company for her parents who were very talented crafts people who focused on quality workmanship and attention to detail.
Jacalyn is a member of the American Livestock Breed Conservancy, a non-profit which educates about endangered or threatened domestic livestock and the importance of preserving this diversity. She is also a member of the Jacob Sheep Breeders Association and, while not breeding her own sheep, helps out at Robin Lynde’s Meridian Jacobs farm during lambing and for other farm chores through participation in Robin’s Farm Club.
